University of Luxembourg (Université du Luxembourg)
The University of Luxembourg, founded in 2003, is the country’s first, only and comparatively young university. It sees itself as a multilingual, international university with focus on research and a personal atmosphere. It maintains several stands, amongst others the university`s main location in Belval where the first building have been inaugurated in 2015.
Three faculties and two interdisciplinary centres are supported and looked after by more than 230 professors and other research assistants. Responding to the challenges that the future society will have to face, the University of Luxembourg established a research focus on “Educational Science” and herewith elucidated the significance of education and upbringing for tomorrow’s society.
The “Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT)”, located at the University of Luxembourg, implements research and PhD student training in the key sectors of the digital information society, respectively in domains of strategic importance for specific regions. Societal functions and essential infrastructures increasingly depend on the safety and reliability of our communication networks and software systems. In these key sections SnT aims for excellence in research and teaching and unifies researchers from the fields of information technology (IT), law, engineering sciences and educational sciences.
Cooperation and interaction with external partners, such as industry, authorities, institutions and international players are actively promoted by multidisciplinary research and partnership programmes.
Prof. Dr. Charles Max
Faculty of Language and Literature, Humanities, Arts and Education
Prof. Dr. Charles Max holds a professorship for "Learning with educational media" at the Faculty of Language and Literature, Humanities, Arts and Education. He is the founder of the research group "Activity Research" which investigates interactive dynamics in communication systems and socio-digital activity systems. The focus lies on human and social dimensions in light of interactive use of technology, such as learning, development and community building in IT-enhanced sourroundings, human interaction by means of increasingly intelligent IT-systems, and digital forms of cultural creation.
In the field of technology education, Prof. Dr. Charles Max investigates the use of tablets in elementary science education and the playful programming of Lego Mindstorms robots. The sciPADs project encourages students to use tablets as inquiry tools, i.e. to autonomously record hands-on explorations via photos and videos, search relevant information on the internet, creatively process the data and finally exhibit joint investigations through multimedia presentations on the learning topic. The Robotics for Kids projects stimulate students`interests in technology, ICT, robots and basic programming by proposing playful, creative and inquiry-based learning activities. Young students get inspired to build and program robots, let them interact with the environment through sensors and motors, and create own projects in which robots move and achieve specific tasks.
